Calfee Retiring
32nd District state
legislator, Kent Calfee has announced his retirement from the state
legislation and will not be seeking re-election. Almost before the ink
was dried on his retirement letter, Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens, had
already picked up a qualifying petition to run for Calfee's seat.
While Calfee's retirement letter gives reasons for his decision to retire, the fact of the matter is, a strong Roane County Candidate, Monty Fritts, had already announced his intentions to run against Calfee. According to Roane County politicos, Fritts, an Iraq War veteran, would likely defeat Calfee. The 32nd district is made up of most of Roane County and a small portion of Loudon County. The electoral numbers are about two to one in favor of Roane County. There are approximately 39,000 voters from Roane County in the 32nd and approximately 13,000 from Loudon County. This will be Aikens second run at a state legislator position. In 2018, Aikens ran for the 21st district rep seat and was soundly defeated by now state rep, Lowell Russell. See Calfee's letter below.

Aside from the Calfee and Aikens deal, several have
picked up for the Lenoir City School Board.
