Blount County grand jury indicts Loudon man charged in fatal crash
that killed Maryville woman

A Loudon man charged in a March 23 crash on Topside Road which left
a Maryville woman dead was indicted by a Blount County grand jury
this week on charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and
DUI.
Chad Eric Sheffer, 41, was indicted Monday on charges of aggravated
vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide by intoxication, vehicular
homicide by recklessness, vehicular assault, aggravated vehicular
assault and fifth-offense DUI.
Sheffer, 41, is accused of causing a two-vehicle crash at around
9:15 p.m. March 23 which killed 28-year-old Maryville resident
Kristy Strickland.
Police said the Chevrolet Silverado pickup Sheffer was driving
traveled into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the
Chevrolet Cavalier Strickland was driving on Topside Road near West
Old Topside Road.
Strickland’s passenger, Thomas Daniele, 25, Maryville, was taken to
Blount Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Sheffer has four prior DUI convictions, which he obtained between
1999 and 2011. The latest happened in Monroe County, court filings
show. The three others occurred in Georgia.
Sheffer had been released from the Blount County Jail on bond in
April, but was ordered back to jail in late June after he reportedly
admitted to smoking marijuana. His bond was revoked three weeks
later, and he remains held without bond.
