Bicyclist dies after crash on Washington Pike in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A 21-year-old bicyclist died overnight from injuries suffered in a crash involving a pickup truck along Washington Pike on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KPD stated in a release shared Friday morning that officers responded to the crash Wednesday at around 3:40 p.m. on Washington Pike at Edmondson Lane. The incident involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck and a bicycle.
 

“Based on the investigation that was conducted at the scene, which included witness statements, it is believed the following occurred: A blue Ford F-150 was driving east on Washington Pike when a bicyclist suddenly pulled onto Washington Pike from Edmondson Lane and into the path of the truck,” KPD stated. “The truck then struck the bicyclist, a 21-year-old man.”

The bicyclist was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with serious injuries, however, KPD shared that officers were told “early Friday morning that the victim had died sometime overnight as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.”

KPD crash reconstruction personnel are continuing to investigate the crash.
