Amy Langley Removed From Ballot
Amy Langley, candidate for the office of County Court
Clerk, has been removed from the ballot for the May 3rd primary
election. The state republican party executive committee, by a vote of
2-1, voted to remove Ms. Langley from the ballot due to her residency
being just outside Loudon County.
Prior to her decision to run for the office of court clerk, Ms. Langley contacted the state election officials to find out if she was eligible to run for the office even though she lives just across the county line in Roane County. She was informed that she could in fact run for the office as long as she becomes a resident of Loudon County before she would be sworn in if she won the election. According to the state election official, there is no residency requirement to run for this particular office. However, the state republican party bylaws require that any candidate seeking office must reside in the county of the office they are seeking. The bylaws go on to state that if two republicans challenge a candidacy, the state GOP executive committee can make a determination as to whether a candidate will be removed from the ballot. Ultimately, the decision to remove Ms. Langley from the ballot was left to the three member, state GOP executive committee. Litigation over the state GOP's decision may be coming. With Ms. Langley's removal from the ballot and all qualifying deadlines passed to run for the office, this leaves the only other candidate, Riley Wampler, uncontested for the office. |
