A Little Too Fast?
You Think?

In the ongoing saga of my opponent, Lenoir City councilman Eddie Simpson's, willingness to say absolutely anything to try to get elected, last week he pulled a whopper.

At a political event sponsored by the Loudon County GOP, candidates were given three minutes to address the crowd about their campaign. When Mr. Simpson's turn came, he chose to address development. He said, and I'm not kidding, " I think the city is growing a little too fast but I feel it's controlled."

This is the same man who just two weeks earlier, voted to rezone two parcels of property that will will allow another 1,027 additional residential units in the city, 903 of those are apartments.  This is on top of the more than 1,500 units he's already voted to permit in the last year. If Simpson thinks this is controlled, what on earth would he think is not controlled? But the real good news is, he went on to say he wanted to bring this same controlled growth to the county.

Mr. Simpson is more than happy to help destroy the city and he's comfortable to admit he plans to do the same to the county. Can you imagine if Simpson and others ever got control of county planning and zoning regulations? There wouldn't be an empty piece of land left.

Wouldn't it be fun to see a debate between myself and Mr. Simpson on the issues?

County zoning policies effect every area of the county, from Greenback to Philadelphia to Stockton Valley to Eatons Crossroads. I know I have readers all over the county. Even if you don't live in the 5th district, the outcome of the race here and in other districts could change Loudon County, in a bad way, forever.  If you have family or friends in the 5th, 2nd and 6th district, please warn them what's at stake. Just say no to Eddie Simpson, Julia Hurley and Mark Matlock.

I ask for your vote to preserve Loudon County.

Simpson's "elect me" speech was filled with strange things. Someone has apparently given him some talking points and he has a hard time keeping them straight. According to him, we need to keep our tax base low. That makes no since. Then he says the reason the county is in such great shape and has a low tax rate is because the Lenoir City has grown so much and the county is stealing from their services. If that's so, why isn't the city doing just as well? They just raised property taxes again and not long ago, passed the Rain Tax and tried to raise the sales tax. The county hasn't done any of that.

Below is a partial transcript of his speech and below that is a link to download his entire speech if you want to hear it.

I’m a little different I guess for our growth.  I think we have to have growth to keep our tax base low.  I’m not saying we have to over do it, like sometimes I think maybe the city is growing a little too fast but I feel like it’s controlled and I want to continue in the county to keep it controlled.  But I do think we have to have some development.  It’s going to happen whether we want it to or not and I think if we can keep advantaged that’s exactly what we have to do.  But, I have served on the Lenoir City Council since 1999....

We have to have some growth.  One thing about it, It's is a little complicated to understand.  But in the last 10 years we’ve been able to grow enough in our city to allow Loudon County to grow their base, their appraisal, the value of the property by 53 million dollars and that, if you think about it, that’s how the county has survived and keeping their tax rate so low and be able to steal off the services that we do....

I will be very equal to everybody throughout the entire county.
