Woman driving with 3-year-old faces charges after stop leads to meth discovery

A Lenoir City woman is facing multiple charges after a hanging license plate border led law enforcement personnel to a vehicle inspection and the discovery of meth.

On Thursday afternoon, March 14, Deputy Ronnie Willis along with Deputy McCall — both with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office — reportedly observed a red Nissan Altima traveling southbound on Town Creek Parkway.

The two law enforcement deputies noticed that the license plate border had fallen off on one side and was obstructing the view of the license plate.
With the deputies now in pursuit of the vehicle, the Nissan took an immediate right on Cotton Mill Boulevard. According to the deputies’ report, it was during this time that the driver began to reach over to the passenger side of the vehicle being pursued.

Willis then initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Cotton Mill and the ADESA Parkway. Deputy McCall made contact with the driver, who was identified as 38-year-old Kara Weeks of Lenoir City — and who also had a 3-year-old child in the rear passenger seat.

During the investigation, Weeks couldn’t provide registration paperwork or proof of insurance. Deputy McCall asked Weeks to exit the vehicle and step back to the patrol vehicle.

While speaking with Weeks, the deputy asked for consent to search the vehicle — which the suspect gave.

During the search, Deputy McCall located a cigarette pack in a purse that was located in the front passenger seat. Weeks reportedly said that the purse was her own.

Inside the cigarette pack, the deputies located what appeared to be four clear baggies with a crystal-like substance inside believed to be methamphetamine and weighing around 18.4 grams.

Narcotics investigators were called to the scene for further investigation. And during this time, Weeks pulled another small baggie from her bra weighing 0.87 grams “field weight” for a total of 19.27 grams.

The substance was tested by narcotics investigators and it did test positive for methamphetamine. The deputies’ report stated that the narcotics were within close proximity — and accessible — to the child.

Weeks was charged with child abuse or neglect/endangerment; display of registration plate; driving while in possession of methamphetamine; and the manufacture, delivery, sale or possession of methamphetamines.

Weeks was held without bond, according to the report.
