Why Any Democrats?

Last week I ran the story on the ethics complaint being dismissed on the solid waste chairman. I mentioned in that story that two members of the Loudon County democrat party attended the meeting and that those two members were also on the Loudon County election commission.

Several readers wrote to ask, given that Loudon County is deep red republican, why are there any democrats on the election commission. It's the law.

Every county in Tennessee has five Election Commissioners. In each county the political makeup of the commissioners is the same - three commissioners representing the majority political party in the state legislature and two commissioners representing the minority party. Of course, the majority party in Tennessee legislature is republican, democrats the minority. Election commissioners are appointed by the legislators usually recommended by the local political parties.

It was a great question and I hope this helps explain the process.
