Traffic stop leads to discovery of drugs, weapons

After a Powell man was stopped for tinted windows, he now faces a slew of charges including possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a firearm.

On Tuesday, April 9, Officer Riley Miller with the Lenoir City Police Department was conducting a patrol in the area of Highway 321 near Mains Road in Lenoir City, Tenn. During his enforcement duties, he observed a gold in color Cadillac sedan make a right hand turn from Manis Road onto Highway 321.

According to the report obtained by the News-Herald, while he was observing the vehicle he noticed that the windows on the vehicle were dark to the point that you couldn’t see into the vehicle.

Before initiating a traffic stop on the Cadillac sedan, a registration check was conducted on the Tennessee registration which was displayed on the rear of the vehicle. The registration that was displayed on the Cadillac was registered to a white Toyota Prius.

Miller then initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of a retail store located at 5050 Highway 321 in Lenoir City. As the Cadillac came to a rest in the parking lot of the store, the driver quickly opened his door and attempted to exit the vehicle a report stated.

The driver, who was identified as 56-year-old Donald Money of nearby Powell, Tenn., was advised to stay in his vehicle by Miller’s verbal commands. The report stated that once Miller made contact with Money, the detained driver appeared visibly nervous.

Miller had Money step out of the vehicle where he provided his Tennessee Identification Card. Central Dispatch advised that Money’s license status was revoked and hasn’t been valid since 1999.

Money was then placed in custody.

During the at-the-scene investigation, K9 Investigator Clay Jenkins with the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office responded to Miller’s location to conduct an open-air sniff of the Cadillac sedan with K9 officer Deja-Vu.

Investigator Jenkins was alerted by Deja-Vu that there was a positive odor of narcotics coming from inside of the Cadillac.

A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search of the vehicle, Miller located 1.27 grams of a crystal-like substance which tested positive for methamphetamine using the TruNarc drug analyzer.

A glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine was also found, The search also revealed a Kel-Tec P-11 9mm handgun and an Assault Rifle 9mm Pistol along with a Joe Bob Outfitters ML-9 9mm Semi-Auto AR Pistol.

The crystal-like substance, glass pipe and handgun were located in a green backpack in the trunk of the Cadillac which contained documents belonging to Money.

However, during the investigation the serial number on the Kel- Tec P-11 9mm was run through the NIC (National Institute of Corrections) where it came back stolen out of Gordon County, Ga.

The handgun was recovered and placed into evidence at the Lenoir City Police Department and the Gordon County Sheriff ’s Office was notified about the recovery.

Suspect Money was charged with with driving on revoked/ suspended license, manufactory, delivery, sale or possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft of property, unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon and released on $33,000 bond.
