An item added to the agenda of the Loudon school board meeting tonight indicates that the board will discuss the contract of retiring school Superintendent Edward Headlee.

School board Chairman Bill Marcus confirmed that the subject of discussion would be the “length” of Headlee’s contract but declined further explanation. Marcus described as “pure speculation” rumors that the board plans to ask Headlee to retire before his scheduled date of June 30, 2008.

Headlee and Loudon schools maintenance coordinator David Hemelright have been named the subjects of a grand jury investigation into the delay of safety upgrades to Loudon High School.

This year’s opening of the school was delayed a week when the state Fire Marshal’s Office twice said it wasn’t up to code.
