Smudge of dirt
leads to Knoxville man arrest
On Thursday, a small
license plate infraction led to much more severe
charges against a Knoxville man.
Lenoir City Police
Department officer Riley Miller, was conducting
traffic enforcement in the area of Highway 321 near
Interstate 40 in Lenoir City. During Miller’s
duties, he observed a vehicle traveling south on
Highway 321.
While watching the vehicle, Miller noticed that
the license plate displayed on the rear of the
vehicle had a smudge of dirt which hindered
reading it in full.
A traffic stop on
the vehicle was conducted where Miller then made
contact with the driver who was identified as
31-year-old Tyler Nelson of Knoxville. Nelson
stated at the start of the traffic stop that he
didn’t have a license and that his current one
was suspended. A statement that was proven to be
the truth later on according to the official
report.
Miller then
instructed Nelson to step out of his vehicle
for further investigation. During the
roadside search, Nelson allowed Miller full
access to his car. During the search, Miller
located a pill bottle which contained
one-and-a-half orange pills labeled “N8.”
The pills were identified to be suboxone.
The label on
the bottle stated that the medication
belonged to a woman who Nelson stated was
his girlfriend. Further searching revealed
the pill bottle along with pills in between
the driver’s seat and passenger’s seat of
the vehicle.
According to
the police report, Miller observed an orange
powder substance inside of Nelson’s nostril.
It was also
revealed that Nelson had failed to appear
for a warrant on a violation of probation in
Sevier County. Nelson’s license was
suspended for failure to pay fines and costs
out of Jefferson County from 2017.
Nelson was
charged with driving on a suspended license
and simple possession/ casual exchange and
was held without bond.

charged with violation of probation and
held without bond.
- Aaron Russell North, 36, Lenoir
City, was charged with domestic assault
and released on $1500 bond.
