Simpson's Not Happy

About 8:30 Monday morning, I got a call from Lenoir City councilman/candidate, Loudon County highway superintendent, Eddie Simpson. Apparently he didn't like my story Rules For Thee Not For Me. The conversation was pretty short and I don't remember for sure if he said I was the biggest liar he'd ever known and an A** Hole or if he said I was the the biggest A** Hole he'd had ever known and a liar. But I remember clearly that he said I was Full of S**T then hung up on me. Of course, he wasn't using asterisks.

Seems Mr. Simpson was upset that I had posted pictures of his council campaign signs on city property and right of ways. He said ALL his signs were on private property or county right of ways. You know what? I agree with him 100%. Problem is, for the last eight years myself and other candidates have had our signs removed from some of the very same places where Simpson and other city council candidates have their signs posted right now.

Back in 2012, city council, many who are still on council now, took their first stab at political sign control. At that time, they passed a law that political campaign signs could only be put on city property and right of ways within thirty days of election day. Then in 2018, city council, all who are still on council now, took it a step further and banned all political campaign signs on all city property and right of ways at any time. So, since 2012, candidates have been under the Lenoir City sign rules and if you put them in the wrong place, they were removed.

Now the 2020 city election. All the current council persons who voted for the total sign ban, have signs posted in the very places where other candidates in other elections had theirs removed.

I think I have figured it out though. Apparently, the definition of city property and right of ways changes from election to election maybe? That's the only way I can explain it. Like I said, the spots where Simpson, Wampler and Henline signs are posted today, were off limits just two years ago. I guess we'll have to wait till the next election to see where the city property and right of ways will be then.

Mr. Simpson was one of six who voted for the sign rules. So why would he get mad at me for just pointing out the facts?

Everyone is willing to play by the rules, but we expect the rules to stay the same for everyone.
