Sales Tax 3
Tax'em Tony
To probably no one's surprise, Lenoir City mayor,
Tony Aikens, got his big sales tax increase passed to be on a
special election ballot in April. Aikens keeps saying, he just wants to
let the people decide if they want to pay higher taxes. I guess he's
blocked it out of his memory when the voters told him, loud and clear,
in 2018, that they didn't want to pay higher taxes. That's the last time
Aikens tried to raise the sales tax.
Aikens keeps saying sales tax is the fairest tax. What he really means is, he gets to tax far more people with a sales tax increase than all his other tax increases. The Rain Tax and the property tax only hit city residents. With a higher sales tax, not only does he get to take more taxes from city residents, now he can tax everybody that buys anything sold, retain in the city. I guess when you're tax mad, that's how you get your jollies? While Aikens and Lenoir City school director, Jeannie Barker, now have teamed up again, just like in 2018, to push for the higher taxes, both are long on talk and very short on details and facts. Aikens says the city needs all the extra taxes for a community center/senior citizens center. However, Aikens has already said even if the tax increase passes, the new community center/senior citizens center wouldn't be built for years. He has also been very vague where the new community center/senior citizens center would be located. Barker's no better. She's just thrown out the vague references of needing to do additions here and there, but has provided no specifics of a plan. In 2018, Barker's plan was all about school safety and the millions needed to provide for and upgrade the schools as such. Shortly, after the 2018 sales tax referendum failed, the school board went on a multi-million dollar spending spree on upgrading athletic facilities. The safety measures that were so important to require a sales tax increase just seemed to fall by the wayside. Let's call it what it is, it's just another hoax pushed on the Lenoir City voters in an attempt by the mayor to drain more money out of more peoples pockets. It seems to be an obsession with him. Below is a link to the council meeting. Please watch the sales tax discussion by Aikens and Barker beginning at 6:56-10:56. Listen for any specific details from either one of them.
