Roane County man charged in local indecent exposure incident

After reportedly fleeing from the scene after an indecent exposure of himself to two women, a Roane County man was booked just days later at a place of work.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, at around 7:41 p.m. Christopher Sparks with the Lenoir City Police Department responded to the parking lot of a local grocery store in reference to an indecent exposure incident. Upon arrival, Sparks made contact with both victims — a 49-year-old woman and her 22-year-old special needs daughter.

When Sparks arrived on the scene, the suspect had already left the area. Sparks spoke with the 49-year-old woman who explained her story. According to the police, the victim stated that she works for a mobile delivery service and at around 7:15 p.m. she and her daughter were sitting in her Honda CRV in the store’s parking lot when a young male pulled up beside them “with his penis in his hand shaking it.”

According to the report, the woman said that her vehicle’s window was up so she didn’t know if the suspect said anything or not. She also stated that she didn’t know if her daughter, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, saw anything or if she would understand what had occurred.

While speaking with Sparks, the 49-year-old victim added that about a week prior to the incident — around 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. — the same male pulled up beside her and asked if she could possibly help him with something to which she replied “probably not.”

The only thing that she could see on that occasion was his arm movement. However, as he drove away, she reportedly was able to write down the vehicle’s license plate number on his black sedan.

The arrest report stated that she then contacted her boyfriend — a detective with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office — who was able to come up with a possible suspect — 38-year-old Gary Brandon Sergent of Kingston.

Upon further investigation, a driver’s license photo of Sergent matched the description of the suspect provided by the victim.

Sparks didn’t show the victim a driver’s license photo of the suspect at the time, however it was later reported to Officer Sparks that Sergent had an active warrant out of the Lenoir City Municipal Court.

A few days later — on Feb. 26 — Sparks proceeded to make contact with Sergent at his place of work and verified the warrant via date of birth and a Social Security number before taking the suspect into custody without further incident.

Sergent was charged with indecent exposure and released on $2,000 bond.
