Pair arrested after bank hostage call

Two men are facing drug charges after false concerns were raised in a Tellico Village bank that one of them was being held hostage.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Brockwell responded Oct. 31 for a suspicious person inside a bank. Dispatch notified Brockwell that Luther Earl Smith, 33, Tellico Plains, who was inside, said he was being held hostage by another man who had a weapon outside in a vehicle.

Brockwell detained Benjamin Adam Davidson, 32, Sweetwater, who had been sitting in a vehicle described by dispatch. Deputies were unable to locate a firearm on Davidson but continued a search of the vehicle.

During the search, a deputy located a clear smoking pipe in the passenger seat and a small black box containing a resealable bag with a clear, crystal-like substance inside.

Smith told deputies he had been in the vehicle and that Davidson drove him to the bank. When Smith and Davidson were asked about the crystal substances, both denied ownership. Both men were placed under arrest and transported to Loudon County Jail.

Davidson was charged with manufacture, delivery, sale or possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and released on $4,000 bond.

Smith was charged with manufacture, delivery, sale or possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and held on $3,000 bond.
