New Storage Building

After the fire at the Courthouse back in 2019, it was discovered that thousands of documents had been stored in the basement of the courthouse, mostly obsolete and out dated documents. Besides the basement, thousands more current and necessary documents were kept in the courthouse proper. Many of these documents are required to be kept for years.

Without the courthouse, county officials realized that there was a need to begin proper storage of all kinds of county records and documents. Earlier in 2022, officials met with architects to development a facility for records storage. A plan was developed for a 3,600 sq. ft. building behind the county office building. Estimated cost of the new building was approximately $600,000.00. As plans for the new building were being ironed out, a new possibility for a storage building became available.

What most folks in Loudon would know it as, the BB&T bank building became available for purchase. The building is located on Grove Street across from the fountain. The building has approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of floor space. The county was able to acquire the property for $420,000.00. A much better deal than building a new building just for records storage. The new construction building would have been about $166.00 per sq. ft. while the bank building was about $42.00 per sq. ft. The facility will not be occupied or open to the public but will only be used to store most county records. Those records will still be available through records requests of the appropriate departments.

The building already has two vaults which the court offices need for secure storage of evidence and sensitive records. It also has multiple, individual rooms where each department can have their own private storage areas.

We've kind of had a contest going on to decide what to call the new building. My suggestion was The Van Shaver Safe Storage Building. That hasn't really caught on. The leading suggestion so far is, The Vault. Truth of the matter, for the folks in Loudon, it'll always be known as the old BB&T bank building.
