New GB Quarry

231 Acre Hutton Farm Located Of Hwy. 95

For several months, county commissioners have been receiving messages from folks in the Greenback area asking us to oppose a new rock quarry. For the longest time we knew nothing about anyone wanting to open a new quarry. Now we do.

There is a company considering buying, what's known in the area as the Hutton property, with the intent to open a rock on the property. Here's the details as I understand it now.

The 231 acre property is located inside the city limits of Greenback. This puts it in the jurisdiction of the Greenback mayor and council. The property is currently zoned M-1 Industrial. Greenback zoning does not permit a quarry in an M-1 Industrial. Quarry's are only allowed in the A-1 Agricultural zone and then only by special exception. So even if someone were to buy the property for a quarry, the Greenback city council would have to approve the rezone of the property from M-1 Industrial to A-1 Agricultural. That decision is entirely up to the Greenback Council. If Greenback were to rezone the property, then it would have to go before the Loudon County Board Of Zoning Appeals for the special exception for a quarry.

So those of you that have contacted county commissioners in opposition to another quarry in Greenback, your concerns will be better addressed to the Greenback City council. If the council does approve a rezone, the next point to object would be Loudon County Board Of Zoning Appeals. The issue will never come before the Loudon County commission.

The property is very much in the heart of Greenback surrounded by residential and farm properties and at least one church.
