Monroe County woman jailed on meth charges

A Sweetwater woman is facing drug charges after law enforcement found her passed out in a gas station parking lot.

Flagged down on Highway 72 by a gas station employee who said a gold Chevrolet with someone in it had been parked for about two hours with its lights on and multiple vehicles had pulled up beside it, Loudon Police Officer James Cogdill went to check on the driver’s welfare.

The driver, identified as Rhonda Renea Givens, 43, was sleeping behind the wheel. Givens said she fell asleep while on her way home to Sweetwater, according to the report.

“She stated that she does take medication and that could be why she fell asleep,” Cogdill wrote in the report, adding he was given permission to search the vehicle. “... While searching the vehicle this officer located in the front passenger seat in a green makeup bag what appeared to be ice (methamphetamine), as well as a small bag containing two different types of pills as well as needles.”

Givens told officers it was meth in the bag and the pills were xanax and hydrocodone. The meth was packaged in three bags for resale weighing a combined 64.5 grams. The pills were also in a clear bag. Cogdill also found a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in Givens’ pocket.

Givens was charged with three counts of simple possession/casual exchange, possession of drug paraphernalia and manufacture, sell, delivery or resale of a Schedule II substance and released on $18,000 bond.
