Michigan man jailed on domestic

A man from Avoca, Mich., was arrested Sunday in Loudon County after a woman was assaulted.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office deputy Shane Gaumer responded to Tilley Road in Philadelphia for a 911 open line that suggested a domestic disturbance. Although no one was speaking to dispatchers, a man and woman could be heard talking, with several references made to a violent incident, including the man saying, “I love you so much, that’s why I had to hit you,” according to Gaumer’s report.

When Gaumer arrived, he met Jason Carl Bennett, 22, who said he was driving back to Michigan from Florida with the woman. After Gaumer explained the reason for his arrival, Bennet claimed they were good and asked if they could keep driving home.

Bennett initially said he did not hit the woman, though he claimed she hit him at a gas station prior to their stop on Tilley Road. Gaumer asked Bennett where she hit him and he replied his face, but Bennett had no marks or redness, according to Gaumer’s report.

Gaumer then spoke with the woman, who said Bennett hit her in the face at the gas station and tried to choke her after they stopped on Tilley Road. At that point, she dialed 911 but was too afraid to speak into the phone.

Gaumer reported the woman’s upper and lower lips were both swollen, with dried blood just below her nose.

Bennett was charged with domestic assault and held on $2,000 bond.
