A memorial service for a 5-year-old boy mauled to death by a family dog or dogs in Michigan will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Morganton Baptist Church in
Greenback.

Kyle Joseph Holland, who has several relatives in the area and spent seven weeks this summer with a grandmother in Maryville, died the night of July 12 in the family home in Lincoln Park, Mich., which is near Detroit.

The boy is the grandson of Joe Holland of Greenback, Barbara Willocks of Maryville and Judy Finchum of Deer Lodge. His great-grandmother is Gladys Holland Swafford of Greenback. He also has several aunts, uncles and cousins in the Blount and Loudon County.

Joe Holland said Lincoln Park police told him the mother, Debbie Holland, said she gave the boy a glass of chocolate milk and put him to bed at 10:30 p.m. July 12. When she got up at 9:30 a.m. July 13 she found the boy's dead body in the hall outside his upstairs bedroom.

According to an article in the News Herald in Michigan, the boy had dog bites covering most of his body, according to the medical examiner's report. They included wounds on his head, face, neck, chest and arm.

There were two dogs in the home at the time of the boy's death. They reportedly belong to the woman's 35-year-old live-in boyfriend. His name has not been released by police.

One dog was a 90-pound German shepherd-husky mix and the other was a 35- to 40-pound Labrador retriever mix.

No charges have been placed pending completion of the investigation.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Morganton Baptist Church Youth Group, 4800 Sinking Creek Road, Greenback, 37742.
