Maryville man trespasses, found in fetal position on recliner

A Maryville man was charged with breaking and entering along with vandalism after being found taking a nap in the wrong home in Loudon County.

On Monday, Feb. 12, Deputy Khristian Kirkland with the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office was dispatched to a Loudon County home along Highway 72 North for a breaking-and-entering call in progress.

While heading that way, dispatch advised the deputy that complainants were actively holding the suspect down. And when Kirkland arrived on the scene he observed a male being held down by two of the complainants — both male.

Kirkland then detained the intruder and called for emergency services due to the suspect bleeding.

The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Walter Cox of Maryville. Kirkland read the Blount County resident his rights and Cox was allowed to tell his side of the story.

According to the report, it’s believed Cox was under the influence of an intoxicating substance. Kirkland then spoke with one of the complainant’s girlfriend and she stated that she and her boyfriend had just returned from the gas station after visiting with her father.

When they returned home, they reportedly found Cox in a fetal position in their recliner. Reportedly in shock, they both proceeded to yell at Cox — asking who he was. According to both the complainant and his girlfriend, the suspect allegedly got up and charged at them.

At this point, the male complainant said he defended himself and his girlfriend by striking Cox. The girlfriend then ran downstairs to her brother and hollered for him to come upstairs. The girlfriend’s brother arrived upstairs and reportedly assisted with holding down the suspect until law enforcement officers arrived.

As Deputy Kirkland spoke to all the complainants involved, they reportedly all shared similar stories.

One of the complainants added that Cox had caused significant damage to the house, as well. And upon further inspection, there appeared to be numerous “antique items” destroyed and a glass door shattered.

The damage was assessed by the complainant at approximately $1,800.There was no forced entry into the home, and all parties stated that the doors remain unlocked.

Cox was charged with aggravated burglary and vandalism and released on $10,000 bond.
