Maryville man hit with DUI, other charges

A Maryville man is facing a series of charges after law enforcement pulled him over for speeding on U.S. Highway 321.

Noticing a 2007 Ford Ranger heading south on Highway 321 at a “very high rate of speed” as it passed him on Fort Loudoun Bridge, Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kenny Palmer stopping the vehicle near Yedear Road. Palmer noted the driver, identified as Jerry Thomas Reed, was unsteady on his feet.

“While speaking with Mr. Reed, I could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person,” Palmer wrote in his report. “I also observed Mr. Reed’s eyes were red and glassy.”

Reed said he had one glass of wine to drink, according to the report. After agreeing to take a field sobriety test, Reed said he had knee surgery about six months ago and could not do tests involving his legs. He performed poorly on a field sobriety test. After a search of the vehicle, Palmer found a marijuana pipe on the center console and another pipe with a plastic bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana on the center console.

Reed, 55, Maryville, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple possession/casual exchange and violation of implied consent and released on $6,000 bond.

Couple argue over postal visit

Responding to a call of a possible domestic dispute in the 2300 block of Grubb Road, LCSO Deputy B.J. Lewis talked with Jacob Wesley Hicks, who said he and a woman had gotten into an argument that turned physical after the woman hit him on the side of the head.

Lewis noted he did not see marks on Hicks, and then talked with the woman. Lewis learned Hicks became upset with the woman because she did not ask permission for his family to take her to the post office.

“(The woman) advised Mr. Hicks is still upset over a past fling she had with his brother,” Lewis wrote in his report. “(The woman) stated that while he was confronting her about his brother coming to take her to the post office, Mr. Hicks became even more upset and slapped her on the left side of the face, leaving a red mark on her face. (The woman) also advised that Mr. Hicks had kicked her right after slapping her.”

The woman did say she had a relationship with Hicks’ brother a couple years ago but did not know he would be the one to take her to the post office. She said Hicks uses methamphetamine, according to the report. Hicks did admit to using meth.
