Man faces
drug, evading charges after chase
A Maryville man was taken to
Loudon County Jail over the weekend after initially being spotted by
police for committing a seat belt violation.
Noticing a driver of a 1999 silver Buick Century not wearing a seat belt Saturday and traveling toward Trigonia Road, Loudon County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Dailey stopped the vehicle at Oakland Road and Highway 72 East.
Dailey spoke with the driver, Charles Edward Blankenship, 45,
Maryville, who was cooperative until he was told that his car
could be towed because his insurance was expired, according to
the arrest report. After running a check of the man's license
through dispatch, Dailey learned that Blankenship had Aryan gang
ties, according to the report.
When asked if he had any drugs or weapons in the vehicle,
Blankenship told police that he did not, and the man refused to
a search of the Buick, Dailey wrote.
"I advised him again of the possibility of towing the vehicle
where he became irate, in which I asked him to step out of the
vehicle and he refused to," Dailey wrote. "After asking Mr.
Blankenship to exit the vehicle he still refused. I then saw him
go to put the vehicle into drive and drive away from the stop
where I tazed him with the taser" but that didn't stop
Blankenship.
Blankenship then drove away, and Dailey gave chase.
Reporting that the chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph,
Dailey saw Blankenship pass a vehicle on a double yellow line
and then proceed to his driveway in the 1600 block of Highway 72
East in Monroe County.
"Mr. Blankenship exited his vehicle in a quick manner where I
put him at gunpoint and he complied with my orders and was taken
into custody without incident," Dailey wrote.
During a search of the vehicle, Dailey saw what appeared to be
crystal methamphetamine in the front seat, door panel and floor
board of the car, a large amount of cash in the front seat and a
"slapjack" (weapon), according to the arrest report. A narcotics
investigator measured the drugs at 6.6 grams, which tested
positive for meth.
Blankenship was charged with evading arrest,
manufacture/sell/possession of a Schedule II substance,
prohibited weapons, resisting arrest and tampering/fabricating
evidence and held on $110,000 bond.
