Man charged with assaulting Viskase picketers

A replacement employee at Viskase was arrested last week after reportedly assaulting an employee who was on strike at the plant in Loudon.

Noticing a man, Christopher Michael Dietrich, 41, Adamsville, wielding an axe handle leave a vehicle and attempt to strike a protester along Blair Bend Road, Loudon Police Sgt. Scotty Newman wrote in the police report that Dietrich was a passenger as part of a convoy leaving the facility.

“While vehicles exited the property, protesters were present expressing their disapproval to replacement employees,” Newman wrote. "Mr. Dietrich and the driver of his vehicle were yelling back at protesters and smacking the side of their vehicle ...”

As the vehicle entered the roadway, Dietrich and the driver, Steven Glenn Briley, 36, Adamsville, motioned protesters to follow them, according to the arrest report.

Dietrich then leapt from the vehicle with a wooden axe “with the intent of doing bodily harm to the protesters,” Newman wrote, noting that when he turned on his blue lights and siren, the man got back into the vehicle.

After Dietrich was taken into custody, police found a glass pipe on him that appeared to have methamphetamine residue, according to the arrest report. Police also found a “small white rock” inside the man's cigarette pack that tested positive for meth.

Newman wrote that Dietrich was under the influence of meth during the incident.

Dietrich was charged with aggravated assault, manufacture/sell/delivery/resale of a Schedule II substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and released on $37,000 bond.

Briley was charged with disorderly conduct and released on $2,000 bond.

Madison man charged with burglary, theft

A Madison man was taken to Loudon County Jail after officers were dispatched to a home invasion in the Beals Chapel community.

Responding to a report of a burglary in progress near Beals Chapel Road, officers learned that the suspect, Lawrence Dewayne Schumaker, 34, Madison, had broken through a door and entered a home as the property owner sought shelter in another portion of the residence, according to the arrest report.

As Loudon County Sheriff's Office deputies, K-9 units and investigators arrived on the scene, Schumaker was unable to use his vehicle to leave the property.

“The suspect fled from the back of the house, firing a weapon as he exited,” according to a press release from the sheriff's office. “Only a few minutes later Schumaker was apprehended after an alert citizen called 911 to advise them they had been approached by him asking for a ride.”

After Schumaker was taken into custody, deputies found a loaded Glock pistol on him, and the man admitted firing the weapon. Schumaker admitted to the most recent burglary, along with previous burglaries in Loudon County and in Knoxville, according to deputies.

Schumaker was indicted Oct. 6 on a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He faces local charges of aggravated burglary and theft of property and was held at Loudon County Jail on $45,000 bond.
