Man charged with assault after threats

A Greenback man was charged with aggravated assault June 19 after becoming aggressive toward two people at a residence the previous day.

Deputy Khristian Kirkland was at the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office on June 18 when he was stopped by a woman.

The woman told Kirkland she was at her home when Gary Byron Hamblin, 73, became aggressive toward her. She said Hamblin pinned her down on a sofa and would not allow her up. She added that Hamblin told her that he was going to shoot her and kill himself.

During the altercation, another man came into the room and pushed Hamblin off the woman. The younger man said he shoved Hamblin by the throat after ducking when Hamblin attempted to hit him.

Hamblin then left the room and retrieved a handgun and sat in the living room. The younger man went into the room and asked if Hamblin was going to shoot him. Hamblin replied that he was temped to, according to the report.

The woman and younger man said they were fearful of Hamblin’s threats.

Kirkland spoke with the woman and younger man at different times and found their stories almost identical. He also spoke with the younger man’s girlfriend, who corroborated the account. Kirkland provided instructions on how to obtain an order of protection.

Hamblin was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and held on $30,000 bond.
