Man Arrested After Entering Ex-Wife’s Home Through Window On March 4, Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office Deputy Nathaniel Reagan responded to a dispatch call linked to a house on Turman Dr., where police got wind of a break-in. By the time police arrived at the scene, the burglar had already fled the scene in a silver Nissan, and police suspected he was heading toward Knox County. Once Reagan arrived on the scene, he made contact with the complainant, who stated that the assailant, James Kenneth Dearing II, 55, Knoxville, had attempted to first enter her home through the front door. Once the knocking ceased, he approached a window close to the road, where the complainant’s bedroom was. The complainant went to the front door she saw Dearing peering into her bedroom window and eventually pulled the window out, before stepping into the house through it, knocking over several candles and crosses on the windowsill in the process. Once inside, she said he pulled out a black, box-cutter knife and began to swing it in her general direction. The complainant stepped back, to which Dearing responded by picking up a nearby mattress and cutting into it with the knife. It became clear later that the complainant and Dearing were previously married, and there had been a history of domestic abuse during that time. The victim and the complainant both filled out written statements while officers searched the house and took photographs for evidence. Cpl. Cody Bengel talked to neighbors who officers believed might have witnessed the crime, with one neighbor (who wished to remain anonymous) claiming that he saw Dearing climb in through the window though was unsure of what was taking place in the house. While outside, Bengel noticed a black box-cutter, similar to the one described by the victim, about 15 feet from the initial window Dearing entered the house from. While all this was taking place, Deputies Willis and Curtis located the vehicle described to belong to Dearing and used in his escape. They later found that his license was revoked for a DUI. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop and detained Dearing moments later. He was in the same silver Nissan Sentra initially described, and his mother was in its passenger seat. While being read his Miranda rights, Dearing stated the victim had owed his mother $100, which was he reason for entering the home. According to Dearing, he decided to climb through the window when his door knocks were not answered and upon opening the window, he reached inside to grab a torch lighter. While doing so, the victim entered the bedroom and they began to argue. When asked about the knife found outside, he said the box cutter was initially located in his mothers vehicle and must have fallen out at some point during the altercation. He claimed that the cut on the bed was made with another object, a pocketknife with an orange handle. He claimed he tore the bed with his hands. Dearing’s mother was also asked to provide a written statement.
