Loudon man charged with assault

A Loudon man is facing a pair of assault charges after law enforcement responded Saturday to an attempted suicide.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joseph Finch arrived at a residence on Huffland Drive and learned David Ashley Yates, 39, and a woman had been arguing. Yates allegedly pushed the woman down and drug her from the bathroom of the residence to the kitchen. Finch saw a laceration on the back of the woman’s head.

Another man attempted to step in, but Yates pushed him down. The man had a laceration on his face.

Three children witnessed what Yates did to the woman and man.

“David also destroyed his bedroom and the bathroom (and) broke a mirror over his head,” Finch wrote in a report. “David Yates (then) went outside to the garage to attempt suicide.”

Officers found Yates in the garage.

Yates was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and held without bond.

Local man arrested after fight

Dispatched Friday to a gas station on Broadway Street, Lenoir City Police Officer Jamie Ketner talked with a woman who ran to the business to call for help.

The woman said David Westley Vandergriff, 30, Lenoir City, assaulted her and took her phone.

“(Vandergriff) came home intoxicated and saw a text message on her phone that her mother sent her,” Ketner wrote in a report. “David asked her about the text message and she did not answer his questions. She stated that David got mad and pushed her onto the couch and hit her several times in the face and forehead. (The woman) did have a laceration on the top of her head that was bleeding, an indention on her head and a swollen face.”

Ketner, along with two other officers, found Vandergriff sitting outside a residence on West 1st Avenue.

Vandergriff had a “strong odor” of alcohol and marijuana. He said he came home and saw a message from the woman’s mother and asked her about it. “They began to argue and (the woman) kicked him in the testicles and he struck (the woman) out of reflex,” Ketner wrote in a report.

Vandergriff was determined the primary aggressor. He also had 3 grams of marijuana and a pipe in his pocket.

Vandergriff was charged with domestic assault and released on $2,000 bond.
