Loudon County deputy injured in pursuit, suspect in
custody
LOUDON (WATE) - Dispatchers say a Loudon County trooper was injured
in a pursuit with a suspect Friday afternoon who was later captured.
The incident was reported around 5 p.m. just off Interstate 75 near exit 72. The Tennessee Department of Transportation reports Highway 72 is closed at Matlock Bend Road. Loudon County dispatchers say a deputy was hit by the suspect's car during a pursuit. He was not seriously injured. A second officer fired shots at the car. Dispatchers say the suspect is in custody. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says no one was hit by gunfire. 6 News has a crew on the way to the scene and will report more details as they become available. Deputy hit by car after chase on Highway 72 in Loudon Co. LOUDON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Loudon County Sheriff Tim Guider says a suspect is in custody following pursuit of a stolen vehicle on Highway 72 in Loudon County. Guider says deputies were chasing a stolen vehicle on I-75. OnStar slowed the vehicle as the driver got off the Interstate at exit 72 on I-75. The suspect then carjacked another vehicle in a gas station parking lot, rammed another vehicle and hit a deputy as he fled. Sheriff Guider says around seven shots were fired - one by the officer and six by a pursuing officer. He says he does not think the suspect was hit. The suspect was captured shortly after on Highway 72. The deputy injured at the gas station was taken to UT Medical Center. According to first reports, he has a severe head injury but is expected to recover. This is a developing story; stay with WVLT for details. Another deputy then fired shots at the suspect's car as it sped away. The injured deputy is being transported to UT Medical Center. After hitting the deputy, THP said officers caught up to the car on Highway 72 about two miles away. Officials say the suspect was speeding and all over the road, and even tried to hit a motorcycle head on. At that point, THP says an officer crashed the suspect at Hwy. 72 and Matlock Bend Road. The suspect is in custody. TDOT Smartway reports Highway 72 is closed at Matlock Bend Road and is expected to be reopened by 9 p.m. |
