Let's Get Away

For the third time in as many years, the Loudon County School Board is gearing up for their tax payer funded, Gatlinburg, weekend get away. The board has again chosen to head out of town for a long weekend to discuss matters of great importance for the school system. Apparently, Gatlinburg is much more conducive for deep thought and inspiration than say, just holding their retreat here in Loudon County.

The exotic, three day weekend isn't expected to cost more than twenty thousand dollars but with a forty million dollar budget, who's counting pennies? While the price tag may seem a little high to the tax payers who pay their bills, you have to remember, this junket's not just for board members and the director. It will also include principals, administrators, board members and any of their family members who also want to go along.

The current school board has shown a real taste for the high life and free travel, regularly jaunting to Nashville for some fine dining and communing, always on your dime and I'm sure they don't stay in the Super 8 motel. I hate to say it, no I don't, but for the four years I served on the board, we had no out of town retreats, zero. I just never understood why it was necessary to leave the county to discuss county school business not to mention the cost.

Anyway, I guess if they want to spend all that money on fine food and fun instead of it going to the poor little children, that's their decision. I've always been curious though, wonder how many of them would take these expensive trips if they had to pay for it out of their own pocket?

Now, let me make this perfectly clear, I'm not saying this is what goes on at these retreats it's just simply a possibility. Back by popular demand, and I do mean popular demand, below is an artist rendering of just some of the activities that could take place at the retreat, in between all the important meetings of course. You all have fun.
