Tennessee law enforcement military-style
weapons include grenade launchers, bayonets

KNOXVILLE (WATE/CNN) – East Tennessee
police forces already have some of the military gear that
will not be handed over in the future.The Obama
administration on Monday moved to prohibit federal agencies
from providing local cops with certain kinds of military
equipment such as grenade launchers, high-caliber weapons
and bayonets, in the wake of controversy over a
“militarized” police response to unrest last summer in
Ferguson, Missouri.
Local agencies have access to military gear using grants.
The frequency of use by law enforcement agencies around
varies. Some use the program every chance they get and
others don’t bother getting anything.
In East Tennessee, a Department of Defense Department
list shows a tracked personnel carrier transferred to the
Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office, 50 bayonets for Roane
County and a grenade launcher going to Newport Police and
the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Blount County Sheriff’s
office told WATE 6 On Your Side that they’re trying to give
the grenade launcher back.
