Lenoir City officer finds pot in traffic stop

Two men are facing multiple charges after law enforcement initially caught them speeding in a 40 mph zone.

Conducting standard radar checking on U.S. Highway 321, Lenoir City Police Officer Shannon Runyan detected a vehicle traveling 80 mph. Runyan initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Highways 11 and 321.

In the report, Runyan noted the 2017 black Audi did not stop and instead continued toward the bridge heading to Maryville. The vehicle did not come to a stop until one mile after Runyan turned on the blue lights.

“I did smell an odor commonly associated with marijuana coming from inside the car and during removal of driver and passenger ... a handgun was seen in the passenger floor board and for officer safety both males were placed into cuffs,” Runyan wrote in the report.

During a search of the vehicle, Runyan found 3.7 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, THC wax, a set of digital scales, plastic baggies, several glass pipes, a Taurus .38-caliber handgun and four long guns/rifles/shotguns, one of which was stolen from Georgia.

The driver of the vehicle, Daniel Vasile Tindell, 24, Clinton, was charged with theft, possession of a handgun while under the influence, failure to obey police officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked/suspended license and speeding and held without bond.

Matthew O. Tindell, 19, Knoxville, who was a passenger, was charged with manufacture, sell, delivery, resale of a Schedule VI substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a handgun while under the influence and theft of property and held without bond.
