LCUB warns customers of scam calls

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) - Lenoir City Utilities Board is warning customers in both Loudon and Knox counties about a scammer who calls and claims to be an LCUB employee demanding money for a late bill.

LCUB says it has received a large number of reports from both counties. The caller says the customer is late paying their power bill and demands immediate payment to avoid disruption of services.

Caller ID shows a callback number of (844) 687-5282, which redirects to LCUB's actual number if anyone calls, making it appear the call is legitimate.

LCUB says most of the customers reporting the scam calls are business or industrial customers.

LCUB says it will never call customers about past due accounts. They will instead use high-visibility door-hangers. They will also send out mailers that ar marked as "past due."

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and call LCUB's Safety and Security Office at (865) 988-0784 or send them an email.

If you think you've already become a victim of this cam, contact your local law enforcement agency.
