KNOXVILLE — A 55-year-old woman shot this morning after smoking crack cocaine was in stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, authorities said.

Debbie Buchanan told police that after smoking the illicit drug she took a friend to a residence near Texas Avenue, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

Buchanan said while talking to a woman standing on the street, two men approached and one of them shot her. She then drove to the Krystal, 3910 Western Ave., for help.

According to KPD Lt. Keith DeBow, officers responded at 4:47 a.m. to a call of a woman was shot at the Krystal.

Officers found Buchanan sitting in a Chevrolet HHR with a gunshot wound to a leg.

DeBusk said Buchanan “continues to be evasive and less than forthcoming with answers to investigator’s questions.”
