News Herald Arrest Report
Late Night Traffic Stop Leads to Blown Tire, DUI Around 11:30 p.m. on March 10, a blue Cadillac passed Deputy Owens from the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office — when he noticed it had a headlight missing. Owens pulled out behind the vehicle in an attempt to get it to pull over, and while both cars prepared to come to a stop on the side of the road the Cadillac swerved to the right, causing a tire to blow out. According to reports, it then overcorrected back into the road before Owens could eventually get the vehicle to come to a stop. When it finally did, the driver, Jakeb Smith, immediately exited the car. He was ordered to get back inside the vehicle multiple times. Deputy Owens asked Smith whether he had had anything to drink that day due to the nature of his driving, to which Smith replied that he hadn’t. Owens then got Smith out of the vehicle to begin his investigation, at which point he could smell the odor of alcohol coming off of the suspect, reports stated. Owens asked again if Smith had been drinking, with this time the suspect saying he had had a beer with a co-worker earlier in the day … as well as a couple with family members that evening. Upon request, Smith agreed to a field sobriety test. Smith was observed to have nystagmus in both his eyes, performing poorly on the walk and the one-leg stand. Reports state that Smith then blew intentionally weakly into the breathalyzer, giving an invalid sample. He was then taken into custody to the Loudon County Jail, where again his sample was insufficient. The officers on the scene had his car towed by Malone’s Wrecker Service.
