KUB To Manage?
It's been no secret around the utilities that the
LCUB broadband experiment has not been going very well. They're
thousands behind the number of subscribers they projected they would
have by this time along with other issues. At last Monday's LCUB board
meeting, former manager Shannon Littleton, pitched the idea of
contracting with KUB to manage their broadband system. Littleton said it
would be a cost savings for LCUB because there could be layoffs in
LCUB's broadband department.
The agreement calls for a one time $50,000.00 payment and $150,000.00 per year to KUB to manage the LCUB broadband system. There's also a clause for other charges depending on needed services. The board approved the management contract. The News Herald reported back in 2022 that LCUB would borrow $132,000,000 to upgrade their systems and provide the fiber option through broadband. It was pretty easy to see, taking on broadband and trying to compete with billion dollar companies in that business, was going to be a big hill to climb, maybe too big. |
