Knox County teacher charged with DUI

A teacher from Knox County Schools was charged with driving under the influence following a Thursday traffic stop.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy and Corrections Officer Samuel Jackson was on U.S. Highway 321 near Jackson Bend Road when a white vehicle passed him and crossed the fog line. Jackson got behind the vehicle, which again crossed the fog line, changed lanes without signaling, crossed into the right-hand lane and nearly hit another vehicle.

Jackson initiated a traffic stop but the driver, later identified as Christy Allison Clauss, 50, Greenback, only slowed. The deputy used his siren, and the vehicle pulled off the side of the road before slowing to a halt about a mile from where the deputy began the traffic stop.

Clauss had bloodshot eyes, was lethargic and appeared confused, according to an arrest report. She tried to remove her license from her wallet but was unable.

When asked if she had anything to drink, Clauss told Jackson she had one margarita six hours earlier. Jackson then asked Clauss to step out of the vehicle, and she had trouble maintaining her balance.

Clauss consented to sobriety tasks and performed poorly. Jackson asked Clauss again if she had anything to drink, and she told him she had one margarita three hours earlier.

While Jackson was placing Clauss in handcuffs, she spoke with other deputies at the scene, who noted a strong smell of alcohol on her breath. In the patrol vehicle, Clauss displayed signs of impairment by asking the same question multiple times and repeating herself, according to the report.

Clauss was charged with driving on roadways laned for traffic, driving under the influence and violation of implied consent and released on $1,500 bond.
