Interstate wreck leads to drug charges

A Lenoir City man was charged with a DUI and multiple drug charges after crashing his car Jan. 10.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Eric Curtis responded to a wreck on I-75 near Lenoir City where he encountered the driver, Michael James Chastain, 24. The caller who reported the crash had stated they saw the driver stuff something into their pants, which led Curtis to administer a field sobriety test. Chastain failed the test and Curtis arrested him for driving under the influence.

An open air sniff indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, but nothing was found.

Upon arriving at Loudon County Jail, Curtis asked Chastain if he had any contraband on him, which he denied. Curtis then performed a strip search and found a small container in Chastain’s underwear with three substances inside. After testing, one came back inconclusive, one was identified as Fentanyl and one was reported to be a Fentanyl/heroin compound.

Chastain was charged with contraband in penal institution, manufacture, sell, delivery, resale of a Schedule I substance, manufacture, sell, delivery, resale of a Schedule II substance and driving under the influence. He was released on $21,000 bond.

Passenger arrested after traffic stop

A Thorn Hill man was arrested Jan. 12 in Lenoir City after a traffic stop led to the discovery of drugs.

LCSO Deputy Caleb Green pulled over a suspicious vehicle traveling north on I-75. After getting consent to search the car from the driver, Green spoke with the passenger, Kevin Eugene Dalton, 39, who admitted he had cocaine hidden in a vial in the front passenger seat area.

Green proceeded to search Dalton and found a baggie containing a white powdery substance, which Dalton claimed to have forgotten about, identifying it as cocaine cut with hydrocodone. Green searched the vehicle and also retrieved the glass vial Dalton had previously mentioned.

Green transported Dalton to Loudon County Jail, where both substances were tested. The baggie contents tested positive for PCP and the vial contents tested positive for PCP/3-Fluoro methoxy-acetyl fentanyl.

Dalton was charged with two counts of manufacture, sell, delivery, resale of a Schedule II substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on $32,000 bond.
