I-75 traffic stop ends in meth arrest

A Jonesborough man faces drug charges following a routine traffic stop.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dalton Harrison noticed July 19 a vehicle on Interstate 75 with expired tags and initiated a traffic stop. During a conversation with the driver and a passenger, Tyler Lynn Smith, 38, the driver told Harrison there were two bags of new needles in the vehicle that were not for drug use.

While awaiting warrant checks from E-911 dispatch, Harrison asked Smith to exit the vehicle. Smith then told the deputy there was a used needle in the center console because Smith had used Suboxone earlier in the day, according to the arrest report.

After a search of Smith, Harrison located a needle in both of Smith’s shirt pockets. In a search of the vehicle, Harrison found a needle in the passenger seat that contained a purple liquid and black plastic protruding from behind the vehicle’s center console. When Harrison pulled back the black plastic, he found a black scale with residue, another loaded needle and a loose crystal substance in the carpet.

Dispatch informed Harrison of an active aggravated warrant for Smith from Washington County, and the deputy placed Smith into custody.

Smith told Harrison the liquid in the needles was methamphetamine. Narcotics officers were notified and a scan was conducted on the crystal substance, which was positive for meth.

The driver was released with a written warning, while Smith was taken to Loudon County Jail.

Smith was charged with assisting other agency and simple possession/casual exchange and held on $2,000 bond.
