Homeless man arrested for drugs, intoxication

A homeless man in Lenoir City was taken to Loudon County Jail on multiple charges Thursday after police received a call about a possible intoxicated person in a parking lot on U.S. Highway 321.

Loudon County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brian Smith arrived on the scene to find Carl William Clabough, 48, homeless, passed out in the front seat of a Chevrolet Impala, according to the arrest report.

When instructed to exit the car, Clabough showed signs of intoxication and had a strong odor of alcohol, Smith wrote.

"He stated he had drank a bottle of vanilla extract but would not advise how big the bottle was," Smith wrote in the report. "Mr. Clabough also stated to this officer he had been walking in the parking lot and some people had asked him if he was OK."

After placing the man into custody, police found a prescription bottle in the front seat of the car with the patient's name torn off the bottle, according to the arrest report. The bottle contained 127 capsules that were believed to be gabapentin 400 mg, which Smith noted was a "commonly abused" drug, according to the report.

Clabough was charged with public intoxication and possession of legend drugs and held without bond.
