He's Just Confused

Lenoir City councilman/LCUB board member, Eddie Simpson, circled in red

My opponent in the upcoming election, Lenoir City councilman/LCUB board member, Eddie Simpson, recently posted a video link on his campaign Facebook page.

The video link is of a two and a half hour county commission meeting from back in September of 2021. This meeting of the commission was a bit rancorous. There were dissenting opinions, opposing votes and some confusion among members. Simpson's statement above the video was, "Is this truly how you want your county ran?"

At first I was puzzled why Mr. Simpson found the video of this particular meeting to be campaign worthy. Then it dawned on me, he was just confused. He's probably never seen a government meeting where elected officials disagreed. He's accustom to Lenoir City council meetings where there are hardly any dissenting opinions or opposing votes allowed.

According to the minutes, as a city councilman, Simpson hasn't voted "NO" on anything, at least for the last seven years, that's as far back as the minutes are available on the city's website. That's 1,576 votes without ever casting a "NO" vote against anything on the mayor's agenda. That's got to be a world record. Let's be honest, based on his voting record, Eddie Simpson has been carrying the water for Lenoir City mayor Tony Aikens a long time, I'm sure we could expect the same thing if he were to get elected to county commission. 1,576 votes without ever casting a "NO" vote.

So, it's easy to see why Mr. Simpson was so confused. Maybe that's another one of the things he wants to "change" if he gets elected to commission. All commissioners must vote "yes" on everything on the agenda.

One other reason Simpson might not have liked that commission meeting, the controversial vote was to turn down a developers request to rezone property that would have allowed nearly 200 homes to be built. Simpson has proven, with his votes, he really likes big developers, big developments and over development.

Simpson's question, "Is this truly how you want your county ran?" You better believe it is. I would much rather have elected officials who are capable of independent thought and actions and who speak their minds rather than a bunch elected officials that are afraid to vote against anything their mayor wants.

Coincidently, this was the same meeting when Mr. Simpson asked for a $5,000.00 raise. Apparently, his 100k salary just wasn't enough.

If elected to county commission, Mr. Simpson also plans to stay on the city council. I guess he could double his "YES" votes for the mayor that way.
