Greenback man found dead after truck veers off road

A Greenback man was found dead at the wheel of his truck in a field off Morganton Road Friday afternoon after having left his job site complaining of illness earlier that morning, according to Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

Darren L. Abbott, 43, Peterson Road, Greenback, was pronounced dead of apparently natural causes, reports said.

There were no signs of foul play at the scene where Abbott was found, reports said, and a county medical examiner said an autopsy would not be necessary.
According to reports, Abbott, a construction worker, left a job site on Worthington Drive in Maryville around 10:30 a.m. Friday after telling his employer that he felt ill and could not breathe very well. Abbot told his employer he was going home to take breathing treatments.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, a caretaker discovered Abbott’s 2007 Ford Ranger in a field around the 4600 block of Morganton Road and called 911.

BCSO investigators noted that Abbott’s vehicle had been traveling south on Morganton Road when it went off the side of the road, rolled across a field and came to rest against a wooded fence line.

Though the vehicle made a visible path across the field as it rolled, reports said there was no sign of a violent crash at the scene.
