Georgia women caught laundering money

Four Columbus, Ga., women are facing theft charges after law enforcement was alerted of possible wrongdoing at a local retail store.

Conducting an operation at a Lenoir City retail store, agents with Loudon County Sheriff’s Office and the 9th Judicial Drug Task Force were notified of potential fraudulent returns at the customer service desk. Officers were given the description of a vehicle connected to a group of women and made a traffic stop.

In plain view was a fraudulent Georgia ID inside the vehicle. Agents were granted consent to search the vehicle from driver Rita F. Redding and found $1,693.08 in stolen property from the retail store, fraudulent Georgia and Alabama ID cards, more than 40 gift cards from the retail store and a large amount of prepaid Visa cards.

“During this event it was uncovered that another individual with this group, Ashley Robinson, was at (a local grocery store),” Brenden DeBoer, DTF agent, wrote in his report. DeBoer talked with Robinson and asked to see her ID. She presented Georgia identification that appeared authentic, but had an altered number.

Redding, Robinson, Kimberly R. Adams and Emily N. Redding were traveling to retail stores in multiple states stealing property from the store and returning the items. They structured the returns in $50 increments, according to the report.

“They would receive the refund for the stolen items on a (retail store) gift card due to the lack of a receipt,” DeBoer wrote in the report. “After several returns they would transfer these balances onto Visa cards to launder the money for use anywhere. Occupants used altered ID cards in furtherance of this criminal conspiracy.”
