Fundraiser being held in Lenoir City to help India flood victims

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) - A Knoxville woman is trying to help with flooding relief in Kerala, India.

Dr. Sangeetha Kodoth has friends and family there and says the floods are devastating. She says her family voluntarily evacuated from the area.

CNN reports close to 400 people have died and the floods have left more than 8,000 people displaced.

A fundraiser will be held in Lenoir City to try to help raise money for the victims of the flooding.

"And it's not just the flooding. There were extensive landslides. There was extensive destruction of the infrastructure because of the force of water that came through," said Kodoth.

The fundraiser is Saturday, September 8, at 12:30 p.m. at the Hindu Community Center, 8580 Hickery Creek Road, in Lenoir City. All proceeds will go to the Chief Ministers Distress Relief Fund. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 for children under 15. Children under 5 are free.

People are asked to pre-pay or RSVP to reserve a seat in advance. Call Dr. Kodoth at (865) 385-4701, Sindhu Jagadamma at (330) 601-2134, or Murali Nair at (518) 330-9491. You can also email knoxkeralafund@gmail.com.
