Florida man charged in motel complaint

A Florida man is facing a gun charge while under the influence after law enforcement responded to a call Saturday at a Loudon motel on Highway 72.

Loudon Police Officer Marty Ward was dispatched to a complaint of a man with a gun who was kicking on a motel room door.

When Ward arrived, witnesses pointed him to the lobby where Matthew O’Brien Fender, 43, was dressed in camouflage and removing a pistol from his waistband.

Fender placed the gun on a table, along with two magazines, after Ward told Fender to put the weapon down and get on the ground. Fender had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and admitted to drinking about eight beers while watching football.

“He stated he has a valid carry permit in Florida but it was destroyed in Hurricane Michael,” Ward wrote in a report. “Upon speaking with several witnesses, they stated the male in question walked up the stairs of the motel and broke a bottle on the concrete and then started kicking the room door. They then stated he pulled out a pistol, racked a round in the chamber and pointed it at the door.

They stated this is when one of them ran to the lobby and told them to call 911.”

Fender said he didn’t know why a person called law enforcement, adding that he walked to the store to get a candy bar and drink.
Fender, Lynn Haven, Fla., was charged with possession of a handgun while under the influence and released on $1,000 bond.
