News Herald Arrest Report

Duo caught in lies, booked on drug charges

On Feb. 5, two women were arrested on drug charges after reportedly lying to officers by using fake names.

At 6:11 p.m., Deputy Charles Watson with the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office responded to a local retail store in reference to an overdose.

According to reports, Chief Deputy Chris Hutchens had made contact with two women inside the business. The duo didn’t have any identification on them but provided names and dates of birth for verification.

Deputies were unable to locate any identification for one of the women, who stated her name was Besty L. Howk from Florida. The second woman reportedly identified herself to law enforcement officers as Karri Anthis, 42, of Walland.

Deputy Watson reported that the one woman — who was later identified as 45-yearold Candy Morgan of Knoxville — appeared to be unsteady on her feet and was very drowsy, almost nodding off while standing up. In response to his observations, the sheriff ’s deputy asked Morgan to exit the store to his patrol vehicle for further investigation.

Once outside the retail store, Morgan consented to being searched. While Deputy Watson was performing the search, a black vial reportedly fell out of a shirt sleeve onto the ground. Cpl. Brandon Dishner reportedly picked the vial up and located approximately .2 grams of brown powder inside a blue baggie.

Watson placed Morgan in custody in his patrol vehicle. Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Hutchens was granted verbal consent to search the vehicle by Anthis.

During the search, officers reportedly located a cut pink straw with drug residue on it and a glass pipe with residue inside of it in Morgan’s purse. According to the report, they also located approximately 1.5 grams of a crystal-like substance in Anthis’ purse in a twisted-up baggie. Anthis was placed in custody and all the found items were placed into evidence. Anthis was charged with false reports/statements and manufacturing, delivery, sale or possession of meth and released on a $20,000 bond, while Morgan was charged with criminal impersonation, possession of drug paraphernalia, public intoxication and simple possession/casual exchange — and held on a $7,000 bond.
