Domestic assault results in man's arrest

A Lenoir City man was arrested Jan. 19 after turning himself in for assault and theft charges.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Luke Hawkins responded Jan. 18 to a home on Shaw Ferry Road to investigate reports of domestic violence. Hawkins met a woman who said she called 911 after Michael Eugene Denny, 42, entered the residence through a back door.

Denny went to the living room where the woman’s bed is located and attempted to take her car keys and banking cards. The woman tried to stop him, but Denny jumped on the bed and held her down. The woman kicked Denny in the chest and retrieved pepper spray, which she used on him.

Denny took the pepper spray and used it on her. She then called 911, and Denny fled in her car. The woman told Hawkins that Denny seemed intoxicated, according to a report.

She said Denny was arrested Oct. 20 and she had an active order of protection against him.

After turning himself in, Denny told Hawkins he had been living at the residence for seven months and had been there all day Jan. 18. He said he and the woman had been lying down watching TV when she got mad at him over another woman messaging him on Facebook. She sprayed him with pepper spray, and he sprayed her back, according to a report.

The woman denied Denny’s story.

Denny was charged with aggravated assault, violation of order of protection/restraining order, two counts of theft of property and aggravated burglary and held on $26,000 bond.

Drunk woman stops car in highway

An intoxicated woman from Blackville, S.C., was arrested Friday after stopping her car in the middle of Highway 411.

LCSO Deputy Luke Hawkins saw a 2000 Chevrolet Impala stopped in the right lane of traffic on Highway 411 South at Rudd Road. Hawkins met the driver, Maryglenn Brown, 61, who said she was stopped because she was waiting for the train to cross.

Hawkins told her there was no train crossing. She said she saw the caution lights on a sign off the roadway where she was stopped. The caution lights were a red light warning for an intersection down the road, Hawkins wrote in a report.

Hawkins observed Brown’s glossy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. She smelled of alcohol and could not conduct a conversation. Brown told Hawkins she had come from a store but had one beer at a Mexican restaurant. What was left of the beer was in a Styrofoam cup in the center console.

Brown at first did not cooperate when asked to exit the vehicle. She failed all sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

Brown was charged with driving under the influence and released on $4,000 bond.
