Dear Ms. Cosner:

It has come to our attention that you are keeping children in your home.  Concerns have been voiced about adequate supervision and safety of the children in your care.

The Department of Human Services has the responsibility of informing the public of the law which requires licensing of child care providers.  According to the law (Tennessee Code Annotated § 71-3-501 et seq.), anyone who keeps more than four non-related children must be licensed by the State for the protection of the children.  The law also states that certain requirements must be met by the child care provider in order to be licensed.

The penalty for running an unlicensed day care operation, which is a Class B misdemeanor, is a fine of $500 for each day of operation.

In order to assure us that you are in compliance with state law, please complete the attached Notice of Intent form and return it to this office within ten (10) days of this notice.  In addition, a licensing representative may make an unannounced visit to your home to verify your compliance with the law.  If we have not heard from you within the ten-day time limit, you will be contacted.

If you have any questions or need assistance with this notice, you may call the Bradley County Department of Human Services at (423) 478-0300 ext. 111.

Sincerely,

Sarah Randolph, Program Evaluator
