Calfee Retiring

32nd District state legislator, Kent Calfee has announced his retirement from the state legislation and will not be seeking re-election. Almost before the ink was dried on his retirement letter, Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens, had already picked up a qualifying petition to run for Calfee's seat.

While Calfee's retirement letter gives reasons for his decision to retire, the fact of the matter is, a strong Roane County Candidate, Monty Fritts, had already announced his intentions to run against Calfee. According to Roane County politicos, Fritts, an Iraq War veteran, would likely defeat Calfee.

The 32nd district is made up of most of Roane County and a small portion of Loudon County. The electoral numbers are about two to one in favor of Roane County. There are approximately 39,000 voters from Roane County in the 32nd and approximately 13,000 from Loudon County.

This will be Aikens second run at a state legislator position. In 2018, Aikens ran for the 21st district rep seat and was soundly defeated by now state rep, Lowell Russell.

See Calfee's letter below.

State Representative Kent Calfee Announces Retirement
Tennessee 32nd District State Representative Kent Calfee is announcing his retirement at the end of the 112nd General Assembly

Along with the help of his wife and Nadine, his legislative assistant in Nashville, Team Calfee have assisted untold numbers of fellow Tennesseans over the last 10 years. During the COVID epidemic many of the 32nd district constituents received unemployment and other assistance through Team Calfee’s efforts in cutting through the bureaucratic red tape.

After 20 years as a Roane County commissioner and 10 years as the 32nd District State Representative, Calfee feels his time will be better utilized at home on the family farm with Marilyn (aka, The Silver Fox) and Sawyer, their two and a half year old great nephew they are currently raising, and in working within their church family.

Rep. Calfee said, he is humbled, grateful and blessed  by all the constituents of the 32nd District in Roane and Loudon County’s that entrusted him with their votes through five successful elections. He thanks them and is confident that his successor will help the District constituents as Team Calfee has.

Thank you and God Bless

Marilyn Calfee
Aside from the Calfee and Aikens deal, several have picked up for the Lenoir City School Board.
