Blount County man arrested after attack

A Maryville man is facing assault charges after law enforcement learned he tried to attack two individuals with a butcher knife.
Responding to a fight in progress on Poplar Street, Loudon Police Officer Jonathan Yates saw three people running down the street.

Yates met with people inside the house who said the attacker, Marvin Ray Murrell, had fled.

Yates found Murrell walking on Ferry Street. Yates noted in his report that Murrell had been in a fight and was bleeding from his face. Two victims gave statements claiming Murrell was upset about money.

“A fist fight broke out and all three sustained injuries,” Yates wrote in the report. “The fight was over and all had separated when Murrell returned with a butcher knife and 6-pound dumbbell weight. Murrell aggressively and with intent of causing bodily harm, attacked (one man) and (another man). They fled from his assault while he slashed at them with the knives.”

The two victims were not cut, but Murrell did put them in fear of being killed or seriously injured, according to Yates’ report.
“After failing to stab the victims, the defendant threw the knives at them and fled the house,” Yates wrote in the report.
Murrell was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and held on $20,000 bond.

Runyan watched the vehicle leaving Allison Lane with a male driver and female passenger. A traffic stop was initiated in which Runyan provided backup. Approaching the vehicle, officers could smell marijuana. After a K-9 unit was called to the scene, the two were removed from the vehicle. “Consequently, approximately 18.7 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and 1.1 grams of a wax substance believed to be hashish was located along with rolling papers, plastic baggies, three glass pipes and $113 in cash (in) all small bills,” Runyan wrote in the report. The driver, a 17-year-old juvenile, said he handed a large bag of marijuana and cash to the defendant to hide and she attempted to conceal the marijuana and cash during the traffic stop. The driver also did not maintain its lane of travel and crossed the center line more than once. After initiating a traffic stop, Frye talked with Washburn, who said she and her friends were going to a friend’s house on Abbott Road. The three other occupants in the car appeared “very nervous,” according to the report. Frye was given consent to search the car. “Upon search of the vehicle, a small bag containing 0.40 grams of crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine was found in the driver side floor board underneath the driver’s purse,” Frye wrote in the report. No one would claim ownership of the meth when asked. Washburn stated she was “a meth addict and used daily,” according to the report.
