Big Tony - Little Tony?

Smokey and The Bandit might have had Big Enos and Little Enos, but here in Loudon County, we have Big Tony And Little Tony. That's Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens and Loudon mayor Jeff Harris.

If there's a ground breaking or a ribbon cutting or a lunch meeting or a first grade birthday party, they'll be on hand, dressed sharp with their suits and sunglasses. And whatever you do, don't get between them and a camera, you might get run over.

Aside from attending events together, they have other similarities, for one, they both like annexations, legal or illegal. But the biggest commonality would be they're desire to turn their elected positions into big money.

Back in 2016, Aikens was able to get his council members to increase his mayor's pay from $6.500.00 per year to $68.000.00 per year. Aikens tried to sneak his pay raise in without the public knowing. Fortunately, the plan was discovered by a News Herald reporter. Since 2016, Aikens has grown his pay and benefited package to more than $142,000.00 per year.

$97,988.00 from the city
$6,855.00 from LCUB
$27,000 insurance from LCUB
$10,327 in travel from LCUB

Harris hasn't been able to get his pay raise nailed down just yet. The mayor's current stipend is $6,000.00 per year plus insurance, $27,000.00. If he can pull off getting the city manager job, he looks to make a big score. The previous Loudon manager salary was, $165,000.00 per year plus benefits.

What if Harris ends up making more than Aikens? Big Tony couldn't let that stand.
