Bids Are In

After six years of talk, the much needed jail addition is about to be a reality. Last Thursday, sealed bids for the project were opened. The high bid came in at  $18,698,000 and the low bid came in at $16,260,000. The low bid was submitted by Rouse Construction out of Knoxville.

The new addition will nearly triple the bed space available at the jail and even more importantly, will allow for much greater officer safety in the jail.

Commission voted to approve up to $15,000,000 for the project last March. Obviously, additional funding will be needed to complete the project. Fortunately, the additional funding is already available through other debts being retired. No tax increases of any kind will be needed for the project and that's a good thing.

The process of finalizing and signing the contract could take a couple more weeks, but construction could begin in April. Completion should be by or before the end of 2019.
